03.19.13Phronesis Spring Tour, Europe, QEH and Gateshead International Jazz Festival..
Hello Lovely People,
If you have seen any of our recent pictures on facebook you probably just think they look like Phronesis on a casual holiday :) but whilst we did manage to squeeze some time off into our programme, we were mostly busy playing music and traveling around Australia! It was an amazing experience and we met lots of nice new people and were treated so well by everyone.
We had an amazing time playing in Perth, Sydney and Melbourne so big thanks to everyone who told their Australian friends and relatives to come and support us - it totally worked!
We have now started on our 2013 Spring Tour and have already played 4 very enjoyable dates in Germany and Switzerland at some really great venues.
We’ll continue on March 20th at the legendary jazz club Montmartre in Copenhagen followed by some other dates in Scandinavia and Turkey, eventually leading us to the UK, where we’ll be playing at the Apex in Bury St Edmunds, the Gateshead Jazz Festival at the Sage and our biggest show yet at the Queen Elizabeth Hall in London - if you haven’t already booked then please join us and come along! 12.23.12Happy New Year!
Just a last email this year to wish you all a great holiday time and a happy new year. It’s been such an amazing year for the trio with the release of our fourth album Walking Dark, a great album launch show to a packed out Kings Place and great gigs in Spain, Germany, France, Romania, Ireland, Turkey, Denmark and of course the UK. Just thinking about all those experiences make me smile and it’s been such a pleasure to take this music to new places and share what we have been brewing for all that time in the UK.
Next year will bring a whole bunch of exciting things for us.
It all kicks off in February and March where we’ll be playing a tour that includes Australia for the first time ever! We’ll be playing Perth, Sydney and Melbourne followed by a European Tour including dates in Switzerland, Germany, Denmark, Sweden, Turkey and Belgium. This tour will end with a great gig at the Queen Elizabeth Hall on April 5th, 2013 which will include some of my favourite people and music creators of all time - Olivia Chaney, Dave Maric and Jim Hart.
Later in the year we're looking forward to returning to North America in June/July - USA and Canada dates to follow, so watch this space!
Thank you so much everyone for all your support and encouragement, it’s absolutely priceless and I feel humbled and grateful for it!
Happy Holidays and Happy New Year.

07.04.12Copenhagen Jazz Festival and London Jazz Award
There’s some news I’d like to share with you all.
Phronesis will be performing at the Copenhagen Jazzhouse on Sunday the 15th of July. There are a few reasons why this is a really exciting opportunity for me. First of all Jazzhouse is a place where I used to go and listen to some amazing music when I first got into jazz. I remember seeing Roy Haynes with his trio there before moving to London (yes it’s a long time ago now) and I was absolutely blown away. This gig, along with a few others, convinced me that I wanted to take up the double bass and now, 10 years later, we are finally headlining there with Phronesis and I can’t wait! Secondly, Copenhagen is where I grew up and is the home of family and old friends, so it’s a rare chance to perform to some of those people. While I’m quite frankly overwhelmed by all the positive feedback and recognition we have had worldwide so far, Denmark is still on my list of places to take our music further and this is the perfect opportunity for us to do so.
So, in order to make this evening as special as I think it’s going to be I need YOU to tell everyone you think might enjoy it to come along.
Also, a big thanks to everyone who voted for us at the London Awards for Art and Performance - we won in the jazz category! Check out the full list of nominees and winners here: http://londonfestivalfringe.com/general/2012nominations/
Finally, we have a few other great gigs coming up in July:
Istanbul Jazz Festival, Turkey
Copenhagen Jazz Festival
Vitoria Jazz Festival, Spain
The National Concert Hall, Dublin
Sligo Jazz Festival, Ireland
Hope to see you all in the very near future.
05.22.12Walking Dark album launch at King's Place, London
Just a quickie to let you know the latest Phronesis news..
We are now halfway through our Walking Dark album launch tour and it's been going really well. The response from everyone has been overwhelming and so many people have made the effort to come out and join us for the gigs so far, so THANK YOU!! :)
The great news is that our London Album Launch concert at Kings Place on Saturday 26th has sold out, so they have moved our show from Hall Two to fantastic Hall One! That means that there are now additional tickets available, so I thought I'd try to get you along for this one as it's a big deal and it would be great to see you there! Plus it's the last chance to see the band in the UK for a while, as most of our gigs this summer are abroad.
If you are anywhere outside London (but still in the UK) you might be able to make one of the following this week.
23th - Gwyn Hall in Neath - http://www.gwynhall.co.uk/en/event-2276
24th - Watermill Jazz Club in Dorking - http://www.watermilljazz.co.uk/whats_on_may.htm
25th - Fleece Jazz in Colchester - http://www.dovbear.co.uk/fleece/
Hope to see you out there!
04.14.12Walking Dark album launch tour
Everything Phronesis is going amazingly well these days and we are in the middle of what looks like our busiest year so far. I'm writing this just before our gig tonight at the C-mine festival in Genk, Belgium following two great experiences at the Bimhuis in Amsterdam and in Duisburg, Germany over the last two days.
'Walking Dark' has finally hit the shops and we are soon embarking on our May tour in the UK to launch the album. There are also two special launch gigs at the Duc Des Lombards in Paris on May 21st and 22nd to celebrate the album release in France on May 23rd.
Later in the summer we will be playing at Vitoria Jazz Festival in Spain, at the Green Hours Jazz Festival in Romania, Palatia Jazz Festival in Germany, Sligo in Ireland and Istanbul and Copenhagen Jazz Festivals too... Pheeeeew! :)
Check the gigs page for upcoming dates.
I'm so pleased with all the feedback so far from the new album and I can't wait to share the new material with you all at a gig in the near future :)
Hope to see you out there,
Jasper / Phronesis
A belated happy new year to you all, I hope you are all doing good and staying positive in this cold climate :)
There’re some things I have to tell you about.
First of all I just returned from Copenhagen where I received an honorary 'Young Spirit' award from the Copenhagen Jazz Festival!!! The award will result in a gig this summer with Phronesis at the Copenhagen Jazz Festival and I will have the chance to invite some guests and expand on the lineup. I haven't decided exactly what's gonna happen yet but I have some ideas already :)
Before I bang on about Phronesis news in usual style I just want to let you know that the one and only Ivo Neame is playing a very special gig this week with his 5tet + three wind instruments. The lineup is:
Ivo Neame – piano
Tori Freestone – sax and flute
Jim Hart – vibes
Myself – bass
Dave Hamblett – drums
Jason Yarde – sax
Shabaka Hutchings – sax and clarinet
Jon Shenoy – clarinet
It's at the Purcell Room, South Bank Centre, London on February 10th.
PHRONESIS are doing well and we are all gearing up and getting ready to share the new album with you all. Our 4th album ‘Walking Dark’ has finally been sent to print and I’m so excited to see the real thing finished and ready!
The UK release is on April 2nd (German release in March), and we are launching it with a European tour in March/April and a UK tour throughout May. If you can’t wait for this and you're in London, then come to the Vortex on 15th of February, where we will be playing next, or, for those of you who never make it out because of the kids (my friends, you know who you are :) we have set up a family lunchtime gig at the Hideaway on Feb 19th starting at 2pm. These dates are below (and tour dates on the gigs page) and I hope to see you out there at one of them soon.
Ups, I almost forgot - please pretend we are your favorite jazz group of all time and go and vote for us here: http://www.jazzservices.org.uk/index.php/appjag-form-2012

A rare chance to bring your children to see Phronesis live!
Children under 16 are admitted free of charge – all we ask is that youngsters are old enough or well behaved enough to enjoy the show quietly without causing a disturbance (while booking please consider number of adults and state the children in the comments).
I can't believe that another year has gone past so fast!
It's been an exceptionally exciting one for Phronesis and in many ways it seems like the beginning of a new chapter for us.
We have been very lucky and have started playing abroad more regularly and it's such a pleasure to bring the music to a new audience who haven't heard our music yet.
The fourth and next Phronesis album 'Walking Dark' is now recorded and will be released in Spain in February, Germany and France in March and UK and the rest of the world in April 2012.
There will be launch gigs in conjunction with the European release dates including an extensive UK tour in May, and all dates will be announced next month.
Let me take this opportunity to thank you all for all the fantastic support and encouragement. It's a cliche but we wouldn't have made it this far without you :)
Can't wait to share all the new sounds with you, but for now, Happy Holidays and a Happy New Year.
Jasper / Phronesis

02.25.11Phronesis news 2011
Just a little reminder and update about the various things that are happening with Phronesis these days.
We started the first bit of our UK spring tour last week and drove around some lovely bits of England and played to some very nice audiences.
The response has been brilliant and the new music keeps growing from gig to gig.
A huge thanks to everyone who came out to support us and listen!
We have some really exciting things happening in the next six months time so I’ll just go ahead and fill you in on some of them ☺
We’ll be playing the second ‘leg’ (yes that’s what they call it in England;-) of our tour in the beginning of March. Then a gig in Minsk, Belarus in a fantastic looking venue.
Also, on May 2nd Phronesis will be playing at the amazing Cheltenham Jazz Festival.
There’s also a special project for Brecon Jazz Festival in August and warming up before Wayne Shorter Quartet (wow!!!) in October to mention but I’ll make sure to fill you in on that in the next mailout.
Lastly, a big thanks to everyone who’s already booked for our Vortex gig on the 12th of March (it seems to have sold out) and apologies to those of you that didn’t make it in time.
Hope you are all well and have a nice weekend!

The record has already received some great reviews from All About Jazz, the Guardian, Independent on Sunday, the Daily Telegraph, Financial Times & Jazzwise..

With any luck it should back from print just in time to be sent over to Copenhagen for our gig at the jazz festival. And if it is, that will mean we'll be launching it in Denmark that night!
I'm really happy with how it sounds and I think that we have actually managed to capture the real 'live' vibe that only exists at a gig between band and audience.

12.31.09Happy New Year mail...
Just a quick one from a very cold Copenhagen to wish you all a happy new year!
Thanks for all the ups and downs in 2009 I wish you all the best for 2010...
Here's a link for two websites I rate very highly:
Firstly the Venus Project which is a humane alternative to the system we live in.
Before you discard the ideas here investigate a little first.. Open your mind and don't be cynical, read then think then read some more...
Secondly the Zeitgeist movement which is the activist arm of the Venus Project...
watch the film 'Zeitgeist Addendum' you can download it free from this site..
None of this is gonna happen overnight, just remember how long it took us to create the mess we are in...
Lots of exciting Phronesis things happening next year.
We have signed with Edition Records for a release in the autumn 2010.
There's a tour and recording with US drummer Mark Guiliana in the beginning of March, also the second Loop Collective festival in February, some gigs in Europe, Festivals etc.
Thanks to Jazzwise who included Green Delay in their 'top ten albums of 2009' we hope to keep up the appearance in 2010! :-)
All the best,
Jasper Hoiby / Phronesis
11.11.09London Jazz Festival, Live Record with Mark Guiliana and more..
Hope you are all well and coping with increasing coldness of the weather bvdrrrr..
Just to let you all know what's going on in the Phronesis world.
We are playing two great gis during the London Jazz Festival in a weeks time.
First gig takes place on Saturday the 14th of November @ Olivers in Greenwich, which can be found at 9 Nevada St, London, SE10 - (020 8858 5855)
We'll be playing two full sets and start at 8.30pm.
This is a great and intimate venue with an excellent choice of nice wine.
The price on the door is £8 or £5 conc.
Second gig will be at the Royal Festival Hall Foyer on the 15th November 2009 at 3.00pm and it's part of a LOOP COLLECTIVE triple bill - FREE GIG!
Not sure who will play first so come and join us from the beginning if you can!
Besides from all that there's great things in store for next year too.
Anton couldn't make it for a row of gigs in March so we'll be playing and recording a live album with fantastic US drummer Mark Guiliana!
Also, looks like a trip to the States is finally on the cards.. more on that in a while.
Hope you are all well,
08.31.09More Reviews, 2nd edition 'Organic Warfare' and touring plans..
Here's a few updates on Phronesis and what's in the pipeline for the next while.
We've got some more good reviews as well so please press the link and go to the Phronesis myspace and read the latest blog entry's if you want to see them!
As the first print of 'Organic Warfare' sold out (!) I've ordered a 2nd edition to be made and it will soon back from the press and will then be available from record shops and of course online through this site :-)
I'm currently setting up a tour in the UK in March next year and also working on one in Denmark for sometime in May!
The tour will include a recording of the next Phronesis album.
The album will be recorded live for two consecutive days at a venue in London so come along and support if you want to participate..
Until then we have a few things coming up, two gigs next weekend in Copenhagen, a gig at the F-IRE festival at the pizza express in London, two gigs at the London Jazz Festival and more...
Hope you are all well,
05.19.09Phronesis tour and a few reviews...
Thanks to everyone who came and supported our gigs on the tour and also the album launch! We've had a great time playing so much lately and look forward to future Phronesis adventures. Also, we have had a few very good reviews recently. One ****review from Jazzwise and also a **** review fom mr John Fordham from the Guardian newspaper.

05.02.09First gig on the tour
Just a quickie to say thanks to all the nice peeps that came down to the crypt yesterday evening to support our gig. We had a great gig!
Looking forward to the rest of the tour.
04.11.09Phronesis 2nd Album Release / UK tour
The time has come when I can finally announce the 2nd release of my group Phronesis. The album is called 'Green Delay' and features the wonderful Ivo Neame on Piano and Anton Eger on drums.
Recording an album with this lineup has been a dream of mine for a long time and I'm extremely proud of the final result, and really looking forward to sharing it with all of you...
Other great news is that the previous Phronesis album 'Organic Warfare' has sold out (!!!) as well as having sold more than 11.000 downloads so far worldwide (!) so here's a very grateful thank you to everyone who has supported us along the way by coming to gigs, writing about us, or just being brave enough to buy the album without having seen us live..
We are playing a UK tour in May supported by Jazz Services with an official album Launch at the Pizza Express in Soho, London. Please come and support and take part in the fun.
There should hopefully be a few surprises at the Copenhagen Jazz festival this year so stay tuned and I'll let you know.
Please get in touch if anything seems unclear.
Hope to see you out there soon if not I wish you a great summer!

03.11.09Phronesis on BBC Jazz on 3
Phronesis was broadcasted on BBC 3 last night and you can listen to it for the rest of the week online. The broadcast was live from the Vortex during our recent 4 day Loop Collective festival which was a huge success.
You can have a listen to the show on BBC Jazz on 3's website.
Also, we got a few reviews from the Loop festival too, one from the Telegraph one from the Guardian and, if you can afford it, one from Financial Times... :-)
Our second album 'Green Delay' will soon be done so I'll be back with more news for you soon..
Hope you are all well,
All the best
Ok then, so far so good.
We have just finished mixing the next album and I'm very excited with how it sounds!
I've put a teaser track up on myspace so go and have a listen if you fancy.
The album will be called Green Delay, and features Ivo Neame on piano and Anton Eger on drums. We are playing a UK release tour in May, with a London album launch at the Pizza Express in Dean Street on the wednesday the 13th...
Thats it for now,
Just about to start this third day of recording with Phronesis in one of the coolest studios I've ever been in, located in beautiful surroundings on the east coast of Bornholm in the Baltic ocean.
Anton and Ivo has been playing amazingly and the takes I listended to yesterday night are sounding wicked! Last day, here we come!
See the studio here:balticrecording.dk
I'll add it to my link section now.
I just got back from Copenhagen and I am so pleased to say that we have finally put a plan together including some dates (early January 2009) for the recording of the second Phronesis album! I hung out with Ivo and Anton for a day to rehearse a little and play a gig in the evening. Pure magic! I feel so excited about it and I can't wait to record again with these two guys.
Hi and welcome to my website,
It’s taken me hundreds of emails to finally get this thing up but now it is..!
I’ll update every section gradually over the next few weeks so come back for more.
Until the bigger picture becomes available please take a minute to listen to my album, read some bio’s and sign the guestbook or join my mailinglist.
Hope to see you out there,
